Battlefords Area Pride brews support with monthly ‘Queer Coffee Connection’

Battlefords Area Pride is welcoming the new year with an event focused on connection and community.

On the third Sunday of every month, members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and supporting allies will gather in local coffee shops for the ‘Queer Coffee Connection’.

The President of Battlefords Area Pride said she hopes to see roughly six people attend the first social but expects that number to increase over time.

“As long as we get to some people and people get some support, that’s the main thing,” Bobbisue Thompson said. “It will probably start out smaller; word will get around, and more people will start to show up.”

The organization has anticipated hosting a recurring coffee social for quite some time, since members typically only connect during their summer pride event.

“It’s a get together for people who want to be able to get together with like-minded people and just chit chat and [get] a little bit of mutual support.”

“When you’re in a small community like (2SLGBTQI+), it’s good to see that you’ve got support outside of your direct community as well,” said Thompson.

When it comes to event conversations, the group president said there will be no set agenda and it will primarily depend on who is attending.

“It will certainly be (2SLGBTQI+) related. Other than that, it’s going to be whatever the people feel like talking about. Just a general conversation and just people enjoying each other’s company,” she added.

The organization hopes this event will help bring the Battlefords 2SLGBTQI+ community closer by creating new opportunities and friendships.

“Buy your own coffee; come and chat and just be supportive,” Thompson said.

The first social event will take place Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at the North Battleford Starbucks.
