Battlefords North Stars host winter prospect camp

To get a better look at some of the potential players in future seasons, the Battlefords North Stars are hosting a winter prospects camp ahead of the new year.

The crop includes some players from the AAA Stars as well as some from elsewhere. North Stars head coach Connor Logan said the experience of working with the prospects has been great so far.

“I love the opportunity to work with future North Stars and just start giving them some of the tools that they need to start acquiring in order to take that jump and play junior A hockey,” said Logan, who has been impressed with the players’ attentiveness.

“They’ve been really receptive, hard workers. Noticed a big difference from day two versus day one just in their ability to absorb everything and push the pace. Clean up the passes, kind of establish the habits and little details that they need to integrate into what they’re doing on a regular basis with their own team.”

When asked, Logan said there isn’t too much of a difference in the mentality on the ice for them between the camp and the regular team practices.

“We’re authentic in how we approach everything. I think we want to give them as much of a similar feel to what we do with our guys on a daily basis,” he said.

Part of the crop of AAA Stars players who participated in the camp is Rylee Belyk, who is from Battleford. Being a hometown kid, Belyk said it would be a dream come true to play for the team.

“I’ve been watching North Stars since I was little and always been coming to games…just always been a big fan. I’ve got a jersey at home and a couple of three stars sticks,” he said.

While it may not be a hometown connection, 15-year-old Kylan Woytiuk has a family connection on the team, as his older brother Easton is currently on the North Stars. Kylan said it would be pretty cool to play with his brother, and mentioned Easton as a big reason he wanted to join the North Stars organization.

“That would be pretty sick, we can live together too, looking forward to it…our family talked about it. Just thinking about that, I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

The North Stars prospects camp runs for one more day as the organization gets a better feel for the players that look to make an impact in the coming seasons.
