No injuries after icy conditions send multiple vehicles into ditch on Highway 16

No injuries have been reported so far after icy conditions on Highway 16 east of Maidstone sent multiple vehicles into the ditch Monday evening and prompted RCMP to temporarily close the highway.

Maidstone Waseca and District Fire and Rescue says Mounties requested the shutdown around 5:45 p.m. after freezing rain created extremely slippery conditions between Maidstone and the Battlefords.

Crews say the highway was salted and reopened by about 8:30 p.m., although roads west and north of Maidstone remained very icy and drivers were urged to use caution.

The department says no injuries have been reported to them, and WPD Ambulance confirms it did not transport any patients from the incidents.

Police have released few details about the crash and have not confirmed any injuries or the cause.

“As this investigation is in its preliminary stages, we do not have additional details to share at this time,” the RCMP said in a statement.

Road conditions improved heading into Tuesday, but travel remained challenging in parts of west-central Saskatchewan.

As of this morning, the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline reported roads around North Battleford were partly covered with frost, slush and patches of ice. Highways toward Eston, Kyle, Biggar, Kerrobert, Kindersley, Rosetown and Unity were also listed as partly covered, with pavement frost and drifting snow in some areas.

Meanwhile, routes toward Lloydminster, Radisson and back toward North Battleford were reported as bare and wet.

Drivers are being advised to slow down, allow extra time and continue checking the Highway Hotline for the latest updates.
