Year in Review: Saskatchewan Roughriders win fifth Grey Cup

The Saskatchewan Roughriders rode a stout defense and a balanced offense to win their fifth Grey Cup championship in 2025, beating the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 at Winnipeg’s Princess Auto Stadium.

The Green and White entered the campaign with optimism, coming off a return to the playoffs with a 9-8-1 season in Corey Mace’s first as head coach.

The Riders opened the season with a 4-0 record and were 8-1 after their first nine games.

They led the CFL with a 12-6 record during the regular season and earned a berth in the West Final.

Saskatchewan receiver Tommy Nield caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Trevor Harris with just 11 seconds remaining in the Riders’ 24-21 victory.

In the Grey Cup game, Montreal led 7-1 after the first quarter, but Saskatchewan stormed back with 24 straight points to take a 25-7 lead.

The Alouettes battled back to make it close in the end, but it was too little, too late as the Riders hung on for the victory.

The game’s MVP was Trevor Harris, who went 23 for 27 in the air for 302 yards.

However, the win was truly a team effort, with the defense securing interceptions from Marcus Sayles, Rolan Milligan Jr., and Tevaughn Campbell, who also had a key fumble recovery at the goal line to stop a Montreal touchdown.

The offensive line, one of the best in the CFL all season long, did not allow a sack in the game, giving Harris time to find open receivers. They also opened holes for running back A.J. Ouelette, who had 83 yards on the ground.

Melfort native Logan Ferland was the anchor of that offensive line as the centre, and he told the Canadian Press the win will mean a six-month celebration across Rider Nation.

“It’s going to be a long off-season of celebrations,” he said.

The 2025 Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award Winner was thrilled with the victory, especially being a Saskatchewan boy.

“This is the dream,” said Ferland. “This has been the dream since I started playing football.”

“It’s very hard to fathom, I’m still pinching myself. It’s going to take a while to soak in.”

Ferland’s high school football coach, Dave Rogers of the Melfort Comets, told northeastNOW he was incredibly happy for Ferland.

“Logan did such a great job, and he’s done a great job his whole career,” Rogers said.

He added Ferland is a great representative of the Riders, the community, and of himself and his family.

“[Ferland] comes back into Melfort and participates in all sorts of activities here around our community, and he’s just a wonderful human being.”

Thousands of jubilant Rider fans packed the Green Mile and gathered at the Legislature to celebrate the victory. Saskatchewan also won Grey Cups in 1966, 1989, 2007, and 2013.
