AAA Recap: How the Battlefords Stars and Sharks have fared so far this season

As the calendar year nears an end and the hockey season heads into the Christmas break, it’s time to take a look at how the U18 AAA hockey teams in the Battlefords have fared so far this season.

Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks:

It has been an unbelievable start to the season for the Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks. They kicked off the year with a win at the Calgary Firestarter tournament, one of the biggest girl’s hockey tournaments in Western Canada and have carried that momentum far into the year.

They have a record of 13-0-2-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) and sit first place in the SFU18AAAHL this season. With just one loss coming in a shootout and no regulation losses so far.

Although the Sharks didn’t have a very heavy September, they got off to a couple of wins against the Northway Northern Bears in Prince Albert. Goaltenders Mackenzie Seth and Aura Sembalerus split the games, allowing just one and two goals to begin what have been strong seasons for them.

October:

October has been the busiest and most successful month of the season so far for the Sharks. They had their first couple of home games of the season with wins against the Notre Dame Hounds before heading on the road to face the Saskatoon, Notre Dame and Weyburn. They won every game in regulation except for Oct. 11 against the Saskatoon Stars when they won 4-3 in a shootout. Danika Dureau continued her dominant season with 12 goals and 15 points, while Anneka Aspaas led the team in points with 16.

November:

Due to seven players on the team going to Nationals with team Saskatchewan, the Sharks didn’t play until Nov. 21 when they suffered their first loss of the season, 3-2 in the shootout to the Saskatoon Stars. They got right back to it with four straight wins, all over the Regina Rebels. Danika Dureau scored her 100th career point with the Sharks on their Nov. 21st game with a goal in a 2-1 win over Regina.

December:

After coming in third at the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament in Wilcox, the Sharks only regular season game of the season came on Dec. 20, a 6-3 win against the Mann Northway Northern Bears in Prince Albert.

With the win, the Sharks head into the Christmas break with a record of 13-0-2-1 without a regular season loss. Danika Dureau is leading the league in points with 27 (19g-8a). However, arguably the biggest reason for their success is goaltending. Mackenzie Seth is 8-1 with a .948 save percentage and 1.20 goals against average, while rookie Aura Sembalerus is 7-0 with a staggering .951 save percentage and 1.13 goals against average.

Heading into the second half of the season, Sharks head coach Nolan Horbach knows it’s going to take an entire roster to keep finding the success they have.

“When we go and we can open the door and just let the kids roll, we’re good. So that’s our goal is not just one or two kids try to carry us through this thing. It’s making sure we’ve got all 19 and we’re going to try and do something that’s never been done in the community.”

The Sharks are aiming for their first league championship in league history.

Battlefords Stars:

The Battlefords Stars have a record of 11-11-2-1, and are in eighth place in the league going into the Christmas break. With a 10 point gap between 4th and 10th in the league, any team could make their way up the standings down the stretch in the New Year if they can string a few wins together.

September:

The Stars only played three games in September, with a slow start going 1-2. They lost their home opener 3-2 to the Saskatoon Contacts before their first win of the season came against the Notre Dame Hounds, 4-2 in the first half of a back-to-back. Notre Dame got the 3-2 win in overtime the next day. Nash Coquet and Noah Larre started the season strong with a point-per-game through the first three contests of the season.

October:

It was a strong start to the month of October for the Stars, winning two of their first three games of the month. However, they ran into two strong teams in the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Warriors and the Regina Pat Canadians. They played two games each against those teams and finished the month with four straight losses. Nash Coquet led the way for the Stars with nine points.

November:

November is when things started to ramp up for the Stars. After starting off the month with their fifth straight loss to the Notre Dame Hounds, they went on a six-game win streak with victories over Hounds, Warman Wildcats, and Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers. In that win streak, they scored four goals per game while allowing just 1.6. Goaltenders Cody Marciunuk and Luke Norman had 3 wins apiece in that win streak. While Nash Coquet continued to lead on the scoresheet with 15 points in 10 games, multiple other players had double digit points. Jaxon Brabant had 11 points, while Lukamas Lehman and Noah Larre had 10 points each as the Stars finished November with a 7-2-1-0 record.

December:

December slowed down a lot for the Stars. They fell in two straight games to the Warman Wildcats in Warman to start the month. A couple days later, they took down the Saskatoon Blazers 6-1 before running into the red-hot Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors for a pair of games. Moose Jaw took both contests as the Stars fell cold to end the calendar year. Chance Regush and Noah Larre led the way for the Stars with three goals and four points each.

The Stars sit in eighth place in the league heading into the Christmas break. With a nine-point difference between 4th and 10th in the league, any streak could catapult teams to up the standings or send them down. Head coach Martin Smith spoke on the status of the team and how crucial it is to play well out of the break.

“I’m not happy sitting in the eight spot, but I’m happy with the team has played overall in the first half…A lot of parity in the league. On any given night, anybody can beat anybody. It’s going to be important for us to come back after Christmas and hit the ground running,” said Smith.

The Stars will continue their season on Jan. 6 against the Prince Albert Mintos.
