In the first of two home weekend games against the Flin Flon Bombers (18-9-0-1, 1st in UPL Division), the Battlefords North Stars (15-7-2-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) came away with the 4-2 win to take the division lead.

“Obviously very excited, [the] guys really dialed it in and stuck to the game plan tonight, and it paid off in the end so Connor and I couldn’t be happier,” said North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb after the game.

The Bombers came out quick in the first period but weren’t able to get on the board, and the game went into the second period tied at zero.

After a scoreless first frame, North Stars defenceman Gavin Granger walked in near the hashmarks on the powerplay and sniped it past Bombers goalie Devin Peck to give the North Stars a 1-0 lead.

The North Stars appeared to be going into the period up 1-0 until Owen Nelson found Finlay Klippenstein out in front. Klippenstein went to the forehand on Peck to give the North Stars a 2-0 with less than 30 seconds left in the second period.

Just under halfway into the third period, Braydon Bruce scored his first SJHL to cut the deficit to one goal and make it 2-1 game.

Later on, the North Stars made it a 3-1 lead on the powerplay. Alessio Nardelli found Klippenstein with a spinning pass. Klippenstein’s initial shot was stopped by Peck, but he grabbed his own rebound and slotted it past Peck to give the North Stars a 3-1 lead.

A minute after that, the Bombers got back within a goal when Joey Lies won the faceoff to Daniel Morozov who one-timed the puck past Serpa to make it 3-2.

Klippenstein took an interference penalty with 2:56 left in the third period, giving the Bombers a powerplay opportunity to tie it. After the Bombers pulled the goalie during the man advantage, the North Stars killed it off.

As the penalty died down, a Bombers pass to the point left the zone and went right to Klippenstein out the box. The North Stars forward took the puck down on an empty net breakaway and scored to complete his first SJHL hat trick and put a stamp on the North Stars 4-2 victory.

Kaeden Serpa stopped 39 of the 41 shots he faced in the win. North Stars forward Josh Knittig left the game with an injury and did not return.

The North Stars and Bombers will go head-to-head again on Saturday for the rematch. Saturday’s game is the teddy bear toss partnered with WPD Ambulance.

The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 7:00. The puck drops for Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 on CJNB/CJNS.
