Surge of fake cash circulating in Lloydminster triggers RCMP warning

Dec 11, 2025 | 12:03 PM

RCMP are urging businesses to be cautious after several recent reports of counterfeit Canadian bills circulating in Lloydminster.

Police say that over the past few weeks, officers have responded to multiple incidents involving suspected fake currency being used at local businesses. Similar reports have also surfaced in the Edmonton area.

“Investigators believe that some of the currency currently circulating may be of higher-quality reproduction, making it more difficult for frontline staff to identify without careful inspection,” the RCMP noted in a statement.

Mounties are advising business owners and employees to check all denominations carefully, ensure serial numbers are unique, and familiarize themselves with security features such as raised ink, transparent windows and holographic elements.

If a bill appears suspicious, police say the transaction should be refused and officers should be contacted.

“Counterfeit currency directly impacts local businesses and our community’s economy,” Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP wrote.

“We are asking business owners and staff to stay alert and take a moment to verify bills during transactions. Your attentiveness helps us identify suspects and prevents further losses.”

RCMP say they are working with other detachments and financial institutions as part of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who receives a suspected counterfeit bill or has information is asked to contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app.
