The Viking Cup, an international hockey tournament, is making its return for the first time since 2006, and will feature a couple of North Stars.

The tournament will be held in Camrose, AB, and along with the SJHL having a team, the rest of the field will include the hometown Augustana Vikings, SAIT Trojans, Midland University Warriors, and Team Czechia.

Representing Team SJHL as well as the Battlefords North Stars are team captain and centre Anthony Campbell, as well as defenceman Gavin Granger.

Campbell leads the team in points with 26 (8g, 18a) in 25 games, while Granger is in third on the team in points with 23 (4g, 19a), which is third in the league among defencemen.

North Stars head coach Connor Logan talked about the pair of players going to the tournament and the opportunity that comes with it.

“Great opportunity for them to put themselves in front of some schools. I know being 20, the stress of trying to figure out where you’re going to play afterwards, it’s a nice gesture [for] the SJHL to do something like this and have something for them. It’s a big incentive, I know a lot of guys wanted to be on it.”

Playing against university teams and an international team means the SJHL team will be going against some older competition. Campbell and Granger spoke about the step up in the competition.

“Yeah, it’s going to be more physical for sure. The hits are going to hit a little harder. The shots are going to be fast. I think everything is going to be faster. Execution and yeah, there’s just a style of play that’s going to be way faster,” said Campbell.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this. So, it’ll be something to adjust to a little bit and it’ll be a pretty cool experience,” added Granger.

The SJHL sending a team also gives a few of the guys around the league to make connections with each other, which Granger is looking forward to. “You talk a lot to them on the ice, never really good things. So, it’ll be good to just go and hang out and kind of chat it up with them.”

Although they can make those connections, Campbell is happy to have at least one familiar face heading to the tournament with him.

“Well, it’s going to be fun to have someone to talk to, because most of the guys I don’t know, since I’m not from here. But no, I’m really excited, honestly, just to share that experience with Grange and hopefully make some new connections in the league,” said the North Stars captain.

The Viking Cup is running in Camrose, AB from Dec. 28, 2025 – Jan. 3, 2026.
