Alleged Lakeland College sexual assault leads to charges against Unity man

RCMP have charged a 20-year-old man from Unity., following a reported sexual assault at Lakeland College late last month.

Vermilion RCMP say they received a complaint on Nov. 30 and, following an investigation, arrested Cameron Kelly on Dec. 4. He is charged with sexual exploitation and sexual assault.

Police say Kelly was brought before a Justice of the Peace and released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion on Jan. 5.

“Gender-based violence is a serious and ongoing issue in Canada and it disproportionately affects women and girls,” said Const. Jocelyn Hey in a news release.

“Places like Vermilion are not immune. It’s important that, as a community, we work toward educating ourselves and supporting survivors of this type of violence.”
