North Stars survive Estevan Bruins third period surge, win 5-3 at home

In their second straight win, the Battlefords North Stars (13-6-2-2, 2nd in Nutrien Division) got goals from five different players and won 5-3 over the Estevan Bruins (14-8-2-1, 2nd in Bunge Division). Not only did the North Stars have five different goalscorers, but they got a goal from all four lines which North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb was excited about.

“That’s what we’re looking for. We want four solid lines, we want to try and make a wave. We want every line to go out there, generate, create and that’s what we had tonight,” said Lamb.

In the first period, the North Stars got a powerplay opportunity when Nathaniel Harvey went to the box for cross checking. Kobe Sawyer took a pass in the slot from Raiden Zacharias and put it through the five-hole of Bruins goaltender and former North Star, Dylan Adams.

Early in the second period, Zacharias picked up a rebound on the edge of the crease and slid it in for his second goal of the season to give the North Stars a 2-0 lead. Not long after, Bruins forward Nathaniel Harvey walked in and sniped one short side on Steele Bass to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Before the second period came to a close, North Stars had a couple players get goals in consecutive games. Anthony Campbell extended his goal streak to three games, then Finlay Klippenstein scored in his second straight. Klippenstein’s goal was his team leading 11th of the year, and his 10th in 10 games.

Drew Williamson scored in his third of the season early in the third period to give the North Stars a 5-1 lead. However, the Bruins answered less than a minute later with a Rorey Elson goal. A few minutes later, Ewan Rennie deflected in an Ethan Andrews shot to make it 5-3.

The first portion of the period was all Bruins until about halfway through the period. The puck was just about on the line when Gavin Granger kept it out with a stick, then Sebastian Miles pounced on the puck in the crease. While the play potentially saved a goal, it gave the Bruins a penalty shot which Cash Olson took.

Olson came in close and tried to go five-hole on Bass, but the North Stars goaltender turned Olson away. The game got chippier as it went, but that seemed to give the North Stars more life as the third period went, and they were able to hang on for the 5-3 win.

After the win, the North Stars head to Weyburn to take on the Red Wings on Dec. 6-7. “They’re gonna be a challenge. They’re in second place for a reason. They got some skill, they got some speed. It’s gonna be a tough one, but I think our guys are up for it,” said Lamb.

The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 6:30 pm Saskatchewan time, while Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey gets going at 7:00 on CJNB/CJNS.
