How the Battlefords AAA Stars are shaping up at the beginning of December

Throughout the first couple months of the season, the Battlefords AAA Stars sit at sixth place in the league with a 10-7-2-1 record. While the Stars have fallen in two of their last three games, they have been good in their last 10 games with a 7-2-0-1 record, tied for the third most wins in the league in that stretch.

They had a tough last game, losing a 4-1 lead in the third period to the Prince Albert Mintos in a 5-4 loss.

“When you have a young hockey club, that’s what happens sometimes. It’s how you learn from it and bounce back,” said Stars head coach Martin Smith.

Leading the way in points for the Stars is 2009-born forward Nash Coquet, who has 27 points (14g, 13a).

“The sky’s the limit with this player. He has unbelievable speed, he has a great shot. He can create things out of nothing. I think he’s found his place here in the Battlefords,” said Smith.

The next highest point getters for the Stars Coquet’s linemates, Noah Larre with 19 (8g, 11a) and Jaxon Brabant with 15 (6g, 9a). Smith spoke about the line. “They all complement each other really well, the thing about their line is they work really hard and they create a lot of turnovers. They’re good at getting on pucks, getting turnovers and creating things offensively.”

In net, Luke Norman has started 14 games for the the Stars. Norman has a record of 6-6-1-1 with an .883 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average (GAA). Rookie goaltender Cody Marciniuk has appeared in seven games with a 4-1-1-0 record, 2.41 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

“It’s a nice problem to have when you have two good goaltenders that can both play on any given night.” said Smith.

Marciniuk, who will be starting on Saturday against Warman, catches with his right hand. Smith said this can throw some teams off, which is a nice change of pace.

The Stars have six games coming up against the Warman Wildcats, Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors, Saskatoon Blazers and Contacts. The Blazers are one point ahead of the Stars in the standings, while the Wildcats are two points behind.

The 3-8 seed are all within nine points of each other in the standings, so the December stretch heading into Christmas will be crucial for seeding across the league.
