It IS THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN

Twinkle Tour returns with new twists to holiday-light tradition

CJNB Twinkle Tour is back in North Battleford for its sixth year, bringing fresh festive fun to the city as residents prepare to light up homes, businesses and neighbourhood blocks.

Registration for decorated displays is now open until Dec. 7. Public voting begins the week of Dec. 8, which is also when the City plans to release the official holiday-light map that guides families through the tour.

Organizers say the classic contest categories — Best House, Best Business, Best Block and the CJNB-partnered People’s Choice Award — are all returning. But this year, they’re also adding a brand-new scavenger hunt designed to get families exploring nominated homes more closely.

Dawn Hornsby, with the city and one of the event planners, said the scavenger hunt will wrap up with a community celebration on Dec. 13 at the Co-op Mall parking lot. The event will include cookies, treats and hot chocolate, along with the announcement of the winners from every judging category and a prize draw for scavenger hunt participants.

“It’s a way to celebrate,” she said. “It’s a way to brighten up a month that tends to be a little darker because of the shorter day. And it’s a good way to bring spirit and community and fun together.”

Hornsby said judges look at theme, colour combinations, lighting, originality and interaction — and for Best Block, how well neighbours coordinate.

CJNB, which partners with the City each year, encourages residents to show off their hard work. Morning host Grant Schutte said the tour is a simple way for people to share their creativity with others.

“If you put the time and effort into it, you might as well get some recognition or even show it off to the people,” he said.

“So if you’ve got a business or you’ve got a residence in the city in North Battleford, the simplest thing to do is go to cjnb.ca, click on the Twinkle Tour, submit the photo of your decoration, and share it with everybody in the city.”

Grant said he’s especially drawn to displays with characters.

“I’m a sucker for Snoopy. I’m a sucker for Star Wars,” he said. “There was some house that had Star Wars decorations and it was like, let’s just park here and watch this.”

The tour typically sees about 40 nominated homes. Hornsby is encouraging residents to use the mild weather to get a head start.

“We just really encourage people to take advantage of a good weekend this weekend with some nice weather and get out there and show us off your talent with your house and your decorations.”

The holiday-light map and scavenger hunt clues will be available after Dec. 8, with the wrap-up celebration set for Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. at the Co-op Mall parking lot.
