In the history of Major League Baseball, nine players have called Saskatchewan home.

That number could increase to 10 next season, as Biggar’s Garrett Hawkins has been selected to the San Diego Padres 40-man roster.

Hawkins was selected by the Padres in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB draft out of the University of British Columbia. His performance in the 2021 MLB draft league helped him jump up the rankings, when he had a 2.63 earned run average (ERA) with 32 strikeouts and just two walks in 24 innings pitched.

The 25-year-old appeared in 53 games from 2021-2023 in the minor leagues before needing Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2024 season before returning in 2025.

In the 2025 season, he played in High-A as well as Double-A. Totalling 60 innings pitched in 45 games, Hawkins had a stellar 1.50 ERA with 12 strikeouts per nine innings. Hawkins didn’t allow a single run from Apr. 27 to Aug. 9, 2025. In that time, he pitched 38 innings in 29 games with the Fort Wayne Tin Caps in High-A and the San Antonio Missions at the Double-A level.

This was the longest scoreless streak for a minor league pitcher since two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell pitched 49 consecutive innings without allowing a run in 2015. Hawkins took home the 2025 Padres MiLB pitcher of the year award.

Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame owner Jane Shury spoke about what it means to baseball in Saskatchewan for Hawkins to have been selected to the Padres 40-man roster.

“That will undoubtedly prompt a lot of the younger players to keep on playing baseball and really give it their all. If they see someone from Saskatchewan make it, that they could make it too if they just apply themselves and keep pushing on. We’ve got good baseball players, and we have throughout many decades, and I’m sure we’re going to have a lot more in the future, so we’re very proud of that young man.”

Hawkins is currently the third youngest pitcher on the Padres 40-man roster. He will have the opportunity to earn his way onto the big league roster and become just the 10th MLB player from Saskatchewan when spring training rolls around in February 2026.
