Getting to know Battlefords North Stars forward Adam Konowalchuk

Nov 19, 2025 | 5:41 PM

Maple Ridge, B.C. native Adam Konowalchuk is in his first year with the Battlefords North Stars after previously playing junior hockey in different leagues in his home province, including the Kerry Park Islanders and Coquitlam Express.

In a province known for its diverse natural landscapes, including the Pacific coast, mountains, and forests, Konowalchuk grew up enjoying the great outdoors.

“Personally, I love the water. Going to see the ocean, going to Stanley Park, that area around UBC, I always love it. The nature is beautiful. I recently found it just, it’s peaceful. So, I enjoy it, just going and relaxing by the water.”

Konowalchuk said that in Maple Ridge, there are some good lakes and cliff jumping spots as well. He and his friends like to spend time on the lake and go tubing down the river.

The North Stars forward has also found a passion for hiking; it started simply from a family visit and some curiosity.

“My aunt and cousin came to visit me and my family in Vancouver. They were like, ‘[are] there any nice hiking trails?’ I [didn’t know], I’ve never explored it before. So they found one that was 30 minutes away from my house. We have a nice mountain range, so we went up there. It wasn’t a crazy hard hike, it was beautiful,” said Konowalchuk.

After that, he decided he wanted to go hiking more.

One of his hikes this past summer was a 30-kilometre trail called Panorama Ridge near Whistler. Konowalchuk grew so fond of it that he started a social media page dedicated to his hiking adventures. It’s called @konohikes on Tik Tok and Instagram.

Other than hockey, Konowalchuk enjoyed playing baseball as a kid. While he didn’t enjoy playing defence as much, he loved hitting. He played rep ball up until Grade 11, but it got to a point where he had to choose between baseball and hockey.

Sports weren’t the only extracurricular activities Konowalchuk enjoyed growing up. He was in various bands as a drummer – a passion that stems from his father.

“My dad got a pretty extensive collection of drums. If you ever talk to him, I guarantee you he’ll get into his drum obsession. I call it because it’s insane,” he laughed.

His interest in drums has given him an appreciation for all kinds of music.

“I like that music has a purpose,” he said. “Anything that flows.”

Konowalchuk has one younger brother, Mikey who is going to university for Kinesiology. Mikey sends him some workouts to do, which he uses to stay active.

Like many of his teammates, Konowalchuk really enjoys the support that the North Stars recieve from the community.

“I like the atmosphere around here. It’s the same with all small towns…but in this small town, they kind of rally around their hockey team and really support them. I think that’s really awesome. Where I played in previous years, we had community support but not to this extent.”

Konowalchuk talked about getting noticed around town as well.

“It’s kind of a funny experience because at home they don’t care, right? There’s all kinds of stuff going on, you don’t get recognized. Whereas [here], you feel like a little bit of a celebrity in a way, and it’s cool. Especially for us, we’re young and it’s fun just to kind of have that experience.”

He also made sure to joke that he likes the traffic, or lack of traffic here.

“Traffic is maybe two minutes, at home you could be sitting in traffic for an hour.”

When asked about TV and movies, he mentioned that he is watching Land Man right now. However, he believes that Breaking Bad is his favourite show of all time.

“You can’t change my opinion on that.”

He mentioned Interstellar as his favourite movie.

“That’s one of the few movies that I’d say you have to watch in a lifetime.”

Like many 19-year-olds, Konowalchuk still isn’t sure what he wants to do for a career if he isn’t able to stay in hockey. However, his mother’s side of the family is very educated, and he takes pride in that. He knows he wants to get an education in some way. He mentioned the possibility of finance, economics, or business but hasn’t narrowed in on anything.

Konowalchuk still has time to decide, and his current focus can remain with the North Stars. He has scored 12 points (7g, 5a) in 18 games so far this season.
