Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks look to maintain perfect record after long break

Nov 19, 2025 | 2:01 PM

The Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks haven’t played since Oct. 26 when they took down the Weyburn Gold Wings. Despite that, they still sit in first place in the league with a record of 9-0-1-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL). They are set to get back on the ice on Nov. 21 when they face the Saskatoon Stars at home.

The team hasn’t played in Battleford since their first two games at home on Oct. 4-5, so Sharks head coach Nolan Horbach is ready for the team to be back on home ice.

“We’ve been essentially road warriors to begin the season, so just kind of bring it back to the community and hopefully give them some good hockey to watch.”

Not all of the players have been away from game action. Seven Sharks were with team Saskatchewan at the U18 Women’s National Championships in Newfoundland earlier in November. Unfortunately, they went winless in the tournament but it was still a valuable experience for the players that went according to Horbach.

“It’s an event that you’re never going to forget. I think most importantly, you get the sense of how good the competition is out there and across the country. So, a little dejected probably from the actual result but overall, I think very grateful to have the opportunity and they come back with probably a little bit better perspective that there’s a lot of work yet to do.”

Horbach said they were joking after the teams practice with everybody back the other day about how the time off could impact the team.

“We’re excited to be back, but it’s all those details within the game that we focus so much on and it’s like anything. I expect it to be a little bit of a messy, chaotic start but I’m confident that once we get rolling, we’ll be good.”

A big reason for the Sharks success this season has been their goaltending. Third year goaltender Mackenzie Seth is 5-0 with a .958 save percentage and 1.00 goals against average, while rookie Aura also 5-0 boasting a .941 save percentage and 1.18 goals against average. Horbach has been happy with both goaltenders.

“We’re excited for what [Mackenzie] can provide for us in the big games, and she did that against Edmonton when we won the fire starter. For Aura coming into the league, it’s a big adjustment. Different shooters, three years older than you. All she’s done is come in, work hard and make the saves we were asking her to make. Very proud of her.”

Forward Danika Dureau and Anneka Aspaas lead the way in points for the Sharks with 18 each. As the team looks to keep their undefeated record going, they are beginning to gear up for the upcoming Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament, the largest female AAA tournament in Western Canada which takes place in December in Wilcox.
