North Stars add new piece to the team ahead of weekend series with Humboldt

The Battlefords North Stars have added some size to their lineup, getting 6-2 forward Owen Nelson from the Melfort Mustangs in exchange for Dru Mushumanski. While the trade was made before the North Stars weekend game with the Nipawin Hawks, Nelson didn’t get into the lineup for that game.

Having watched that game and played against the North Stars with Melfort earlier this season, Nelson understands the team’s play style and what he can bring to the team.

“I feel like we got a lot of young guys with a lot of speed and skill that complement my game. I’m excited to play with some of those guys. They’re a very fast team,” said Nelson. “I know playing against them in Melfort, they’re always a tough opponent, so I’m excited to be on the right side of things now.”

North Stars head coach has been impressed with Nelson thus far.

“He’s a great kid, you can tell that just from the few short days we’ve had with them. High character guy, he fits the group well. We saw him play the first time we were in Melfort. Picked up the puck on the other side of our defenceman, roofed it,” Connor Logan said. “I think our group has a ton of great skating, we were looking for a little bit more size and skill and guys that can complement those kinds of players.”

Nelson has been happy with how the organization has welcomed him in.

“They’ve been very welcoming, everyone from coaches, all the players. Just been doing new things around the city and just seeing different sites and meeting different people. So it’s been good so far,” he said.

The North Stars play the Humboldt Broncos for a couple of games this weekend, which Nelson is feeling good heading into.

“I feel good. They’re a good team, but we’re a good team as well. We’re going to play with some speed and we’re going to get after them. Have a good week of practice here and we’ll be ready Friday and Saturday.”

Nelson has nine points (4g, 5a) in 15 games with the Mustangs so far this season.

The newest North Star looks to get into the lineup when they take on the Broncos on Nov. 21 and 22.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story stated Nelson was a defenceman. That is incorrect. He is, in fact, a forward. The story has been corrected.
