Serpa loses shutout bid late, North Stars take down Nipawin Hawks 4-1 on the road

Nov 15, 2025 | 11:28 PM

Battlefords North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa had a shutout through 59 minutes and 47 seconds against the Nipawin Hawks, but Nipawin (11-6-1-0, 2nd in UPL Division) finally got one past Serpa on their 44th shot of the game in a 4-1 North Stars (9-5-2-2, 3rd in Nutrien Division) win.

With Austin Garrett and Sebastian Miles both out, the North Stars went with 13 forwards and five defencemen, getting Carson Meyer back into the lineup.

The North Stars got their first of the game early in the first period when Gavin Granger put a one timer from the point past Hawks goaltender Colten Scott to give the North Stars a 1-0 lead.

Later in the period on the powerplay, Alessio Nardelli got on the board after a shot from the point deflected off a Hawks player and went top shelf to give the North Stars a 2-0 lead. That was the only power play goal the North Stars had, going 1-3 on the man advantage. The North Stars took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

No goals were scored in the second period, but it wasn’t without fireworks. Less than five minutes into the period, the Hawks appeared to make it a 2-1 game but it was called no goal as the shot past Serpa came on a delayed penalty. Instead of a goal, the Hawks went to the penalty kill. Carter Anderson was also given a 10-minute misconduct after punching the glass out of frustration in the box.

A few minutes later, North Stars forward Eric Marks and Nipawin Hawks defenceman Justus Cutler dropped the gloves despite two refs trying to seperate them. Both players were given five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct.

In the third period, Josh Knittig scored his team leading eighth goal of the year, scoring on the backhand through the five hole to put the North Stars up 3-0. Later on, Finlay Klippenstein deflected an Owen Dyck point shot home to extend the North Stars lead to 4-0.

Will Whitter scored in tight with 13 seconds to go to spoil the shutout attempt to make it 4-1. However, it was too little too late and the North Stars took the 4-1 win.

With the win, the North Stars got their second straight victory and improved their record to 6-0 on the season when they score two or more goals in the first period.

In their next games, the North Stars will face off with the Humboldt Broncos in a home-and-home series on Nov. 21 and 22. The Ultra Print Services pregame show will begin at 7:00 pm on Nov. 21, Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey will begin at 7:30 on CJNB/CJNS.
