Battleford businesses prepare for Grey Cup Sunday

For those not going to Winnipeg for the Grey Cup this weekend, there are plenty of Rider fan experiences to take advantage of within the Battlefords area.

Since it’s been over a decade since the Saskatchewan Roughriders went to the CFL Final, local restaurants and bars say they expect to see high numbers of customers in their establishments.

Operator of North Battleford Boston Pizza, Lafzlo Horvath, said he is looking forward to seeing the business full of green and white when the Riders face the Montreal Alouettes this Sunday.

“It’s a big game. The Riders aren’t in it every year. I think it’s going to be special this year. We’ll definitely be full; people will want to come early and get a seat,” said Horvath.

Bishwadip Sarkr, manager at Blend Kitchen and Bar, said if customers want to dine-in, it’s a good idea to make a reservation, but that’s not required on the bar side for those just wanting to have a drink while they cheer.

Fans looking for a unique game day experience can book a spot at either of the indoor golf lounges in the city.

Owner of Clubs and Suds, Cory Schmaltz, said his golf lounge is the perfect game-day hub.

“There’s not a spot in the building where you can’t watch the game while you’re playing pool or playing golf or just sitting in the lounge,” said Schmaltz.

Multiple businesses will also be holding raffles and door prizes during the game, including signed jerseys and other swag.

Operation Red Nose will be available for safe rides home during Grey Cup Sunday. The number to call is 306-445-1020 or 306-441-4676 .

Whether people are out at a local establishment or at home, the province is encouraging all residents to show their Rider pride on Friday, Nov. 14, which was recently proclaimed as “Green and White Day” in Saskatchewan.

The Roughriders and Alouettes will meet in the 112th Grey Cup at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg this Sunday, Nov. 15 with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
