North Battleford represented as Saskatoon Hilltops win Canadian Bowl

The Canadian Bowl to decide the CJFL Championship was held at SMF Field in Saskatoon between the Saskatoon Hilltops and the Okanagan Sun on Nov. 9, and in the end, the Hilltops took it 21-18 thanks to a game-winning 37-yard field goal from Hilltops kicker Ryden Gratton.

The Hilltops have three players from North Battleford on the squad in fourth-year receiver Jackson Geddes, second-year defensive lineman Huntur Johnson and second-year offensive lineman Oskar Hummeny, who all previously played at North Battleford Comprehensive High School.

Hummeny talked about the nerves of watching the game-winning field goal go through the uprights.

“I was on the edge of my seat watching that. Then we kicked a field goal, and I think that might have been one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen,” said Hummeny. “Eventually, we got an interception too right at the end of the game to seal the deal, and then, we won it.”

The team had a 16-4 lead at halftime before Okanagan came back to tie it at 18 in the fourth quarter, setting up the Hilltops’ game-winning field goal. Geddes talked about how the game and the season in general weren’t an easy path for the team.

“We’ve had a lot of face a lot of adversity this season. We started week one, went to Winnipeg, and ended up losing that game, which was super unexpected for us. Had a couple of different quarterbacks throughout the year, just due to injury. It was a long, hard season, but really happy that we came out on top at the end.”

Johnson also talked about facing some adversity throughout the season and in the playoffs.

“Even in the semi-final game there against Regina, we were down and we came back [to win].”

“It’s a great experience playing with these guys again. It just shows the relationships that football can bring along, and I wouldn’t be happier to represent them than there’s no better high school football than NBCHS and the coaching and the program there and all the support from the city,” said Johnson, talking about playing with teammates from North Battleford.

Geddes and Hummeny echoed Johnson.

“Really proud of those guys. I think it’s obviously a testament to the coaching in North Battleford as well, to have those three guys on the team be national champions,” said Geddes.

“We’re not a big town. It’s just two high schools, and compared to other towns like Regina or Saskatoon, they have a bunch of guys to pick from. I just think it’s pretty cool. [The] three of us on the team representing North Battleford,” added Hummeny.

The Hilltops finished the year 6-2 before going on to win their 24th championship in franchise history.
