Getting to know Battlefords North Stars forward Josh Knittig

Since joining the North Stars last season, Josh Knittig says he feels right at home in the Black and Silver.

Hailing from Saskatoon, the assistant captain is close to home and has the opportunity to go and see his folks while also enjoying a home-cooked meal. Some meals, though, he looks forward to more than others.

“I love my dad’s lasagna. Really, really good. A bunch of layers, noodles, cottage cheese, meat, it works really [well],” said Knittig, adding he enjoys the fact that his family can come to games in the Battlefords every so often.

When Knittig is home on weekends, he likes watching the NFL. Like his father, Knittig is a Dallas Cowboys fan and while he does enjoy watching the Cowboys, he also mentioned that he is in a few fantasy football leagues, so he tries to watch as many different teams and players as possible.

Hockey and football are far from the only sports he enjoys.

A lot of Knittig’s interests revolve around different sports, and he doesn’t have any city loyalty for his teams. He was cheering for the Blue Jays through their most recent playoff run, but he’s a fan of the San Diego Padres, which stems from Fernando Tatis Jr. In the NBA, he’s a Golden State Warriors fan and cited Stephen Curry as the reason.

When he’s away from the rink, Knittig really enjoys spending time with his friends. A lot of them play hockey elsewhere, so he said that it’s good to catch up with them when everyone is away from the team.

Additionally, Knittig mentioned a few different kinds of music that he enjoys listening to.

“I like, honestly, anything. Country’s been my favourite for a while now. I really like Morgan Wallen. Rap’s good, throwback pop. I like the 2010’s [pop].”

He has never been to any concerts but mentioned that Morgan Wallen is his dream show and looked at going when Wallen was in Edmonton, but it didn’t come to fruition.

When asked what his first choice would be for a team night, Knittig said that he would like to have the guys over to hang out and watch some hockey. He also mentioned that the guys like to play UFC video games together, where his favourite fighters are Conor McGregor and Ilia Topuria.

Knittig is in his second year with the team and has embraced the Battlefords as a community.

“Lot of respect. Fans every night, no matter what the score is or what’s going on in the game. The fans are always here supporting. It’s been pretty awesome. My billet family is amazing, it’s been an honour living here.”

Knittig has animals in his life wherever he goes. His billet family has a couple of cats, and he goes home to Saskatoon to see his dog Ryder, who is a Bichon Shih Tzu Poodle.

The forward is on pace to have 56 points in 56 games this year, which would be the highest total in his Junior hockey career.
