North Stars drop third straight, lose 7-6 in overtime to the Nipawin Hawks

Nov 5, 2025 | 12:36 AM

The Battlefords North Stars (6-4-2-2, 3rd in Nutrien Division) went to their second straight overtime game, dropping it 7-6 to the Nipawin Hawks (10-5-1-0, 1st in UPL division).

Nipawin got on the board first when Finley Radloff took a pass in tight and slotted it past North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead about halfway into the first period. A couple minutes later, Carter Geysen scored for the North Stars on a similar play on the powerplay, to tie the game up at one.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead into the second period after Tiernan Ryan scored with less than five minutes to go in the frame.

Early in the second period, Sam Kirwan got his first goal in the SJHL after receiving a great feed from Kobe Sawyer in front and putting the puck into the yawning cage. Just 32 seconds later, Nipawin took the lead back courtesy of Eric Hoiness who sprung behind the North Stars defence before taking a pass on the edge of the crease and scoring.

Mason Karakochuk gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead a few minutes later, taking a deke to the forehand on Serpa and sliding the puck into the back of the net.

The North Stars stormed back to tie things up at four in the second period when Josh Knittig picked up a loose puck and scored, then Adam Konowalchuk put the puck in from a tough angle on a 2-on-1 less than two minutes later.

Near the start of the third period, Jack Drake walked into the zone and went blocker side on Serpa, and the Hawks went up 5-4.

Finlay Klippenstein scored the next two goals of the game. One on partial breakaway then the next on a passing play, taking the feed from Knittig and burying it to put the North Stars up 1.

Just over halfway through the third, Noah Derouin picked up a rebound with his back to the net, spun around and slid the puck in to tie it up at 6, which would eventually be the score heading into overtime.

In the overtime period, Clayton Nesbitt walked into the zone before picking up his own rebound and sliding it in just inside of the post. The North Stars argued that Sebastian Miles took a knee-on-knee hit which led to the Hawks’ chance, but couldn’t do anything else and the Hawks ended up with the 7-6 victory.

The North Stars will look to avoid losing their fourth straight game when they host the Yorkton Terriers on Nov. 7. The Ultra Print Services pregame show begins at 7:00 with puck drop for Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 on CJNB/CJNS.
