As Warman grows, so does the rising need for support

Saskatchewan’s fastest growing city is starting to see an increase of people in need.

The City of Warman has a high level of economic prosperity, and it is considered a desirable, well-off community in the province. Local help centers in the city said they have recently seen a rise in the number of families needing extra help.

Barbara Shram, Director of the Warman Food Bank, said currently over 150 people are in need of grocery assistance each month, compared to roughly 100 people in the months prior.

“We’re very aware of the cost-of-living increases and the hardship it places on Warman families. So, we have a heart to help families get on their feet and help in whatever ways we can,” Shram said.

The Warman food bank originally opened in 2006 and was used to help families, especially during the holidays. Last month, the food bank moved to its own building funded by a non-profit organization to provide more space and easier accessibility to the community.

Darlene Hartshorn, president of the Warman Hand Up Cupboard said she has also seen an increase and is currently helping around 100 people every week.

“Whenever you go to a place that is offering this service, you should never feel judged. You should always feel comfortable when you go,” said Hartshorn.

Heading into the holidays, both help centers will be participating in community Christmas hampers.

“The Hand Up Cupboard is involved with Adopt a Family with Warman KidSport and the City of Warman. We’re doing adopt a family again this year. So, if people know someone that they think is in need, they can nominate them,” Hartshorn said.

This will be the second year the Hand Up Cupboard is partnering with Adopt a Family. Last year approximately 16 hampers were handed out around the community. This number is expected to rise significantly for the upcoming season.

“We collect the food and or money and we put together Christmas hampers and then the firemen deliver them to residents of Warman. We do that in partnership with the Warman Fire Department,” Shram said.

Food and cash donations can be made to the Warman Food Bank and Warman Hand Up Cupboard.
