Battlefords area continues to support those in need as winter comes

Oct 28, 2025 | 4:14 PM

Battlefords community centers are preparing to help those in need by keeping them warm over the coming winter season.

The Share the Warmth Project, also known as Coats for Kids, has supplied those in need with winter clothing for over 20 years. Over the span of last winter, more than 500 pieces of outerwear were distributed, not including mitts and toques.

Erin Katerynych, executive director at Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre, said the charity wants to make sure that nobody outdoors is cold this winter.

“When the food bank is open in the mornings, that’s when we would distribute winter jackets and stuff through that. Whereas when it comes to kids, we like to work with the schools,” she said.

This year, the food bank is partnering with Battlefords Boys and Girls Club on their mission to hand out 500 donated items. Katerynych said supplying children is not an issue this year, but they are lacking stock for adult sizes.

“We would love any gently used outdoor winter gear that people are looking to get rid of. We are in desperate need of bigger outdoor winter gear like adult jackets, ski pants, shoes and winter boots,” she said.

Donations can also be made to the Battlefords homeless shelter. Pearl Little, coordinator of Miwasin Kekinaw, said in the winter months, the building will also be used as a warm up shelter.

“They [people in need] can come and sit in the foyer. If they want something to eat, we will provide them with some food and water and just a place for them to come and warm up, keep out of the cold,” said Little.
