WOLFVILLE — Braden Calvert forced a decisive match in the best-of-three men’s final at the Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials with an 8-5 win over Jordon McDonald on Saturday afternoon.

Calvert put the match away with steals of tow in the eighth end and one in the ninth.

McDonald beat Calvert 10-5 in the series opener Friday night.

The third match between the Winnipeg skips is set for Sunday.

Earlier, Edmonton’s Selena Sturmay opened the women’s final with an 8-5 win over Victoria’s Kayla MacMillan. But MacMillan bounced back Saturday night with a 10-9 win to force a third and deciding game on Sunday.

MacMillan, trailing 5-3 in the sixth, scored two with the hammer to tie it, then stole five in the seventh end to take a 10-5 lead. Sturmay scored one in the eighth, stole two in the ninth and one in the 10th, but came up short.

The men’s and women’s winners of the pre-trials move on to the Montana’s Olympic Curling Trials next month in Halifax.
