North Stars get three goals in one penalty kill, take down the Warman Wolverines 8-2

After a 6-0 loss to the Humboldt Broncos in their last game, the Battlefords North Stars needed a bounce back performance. They got exactly that on the road against the Warman Wolverines.

Slow starts have been an issue for the North Stars early in the year, but they were able get up 1-0 just over five minutes into the first when Carter Geysen took a pass in the slot and fired it past Taye Timmerman to make it 1-0. A few minutes later, Austin Garrett found Josh Knittig out in front to make it 2-0.

Just over halfway through the period, Cole Hines got on a breakaway and put it off the crossbar and in. His first goal of the year put the North Stars up 3-0 after the first period.

Warman defenseman Pherson Loehndorf took a cross-crease pass close to the halfway mark of the second and scored to make it 3-1. Just over five minutes later, Geysen went to the box for slashing to give the Wildcats an opportunity to get back into it, but it was the North Stars who did the damage on the penalty kill.

Kaleb Dewar left the zone on a 2-on-1 and sniped the puck top shelf to put the North Stars 4-1 North Stars. Thirty seconds later, Finlay Klippenstein got a break and put it behind Timmerman to extend the lead to 5-1. After allowing 18 goals on 23 shots, Timmerman was pulled, and Griffin Wright came into the game in relief.

Wright was tested early and didn’t pass the first test. Dewar walked in on the left side of the zone before shooting the puck off the elbow of the net and in for his second goal of the penalty kill, and the North Stars third goal of the kill. All three goals were scored within a minute of each other.

The North Stars couldn’t do any more damage in the second period, going into the third up 6-1. Drew Williamson scored two goals in the third period for the North Stars, and they took it 8-2. Kaeden Serpa was stellar once again for Battlefords, stopping 38 of the 40 shots that went his way.

The North Stars and Wolverines go to battle again on Saturday, Sept. 18 when the North Stars look to make it two straight wins. The Ultra Print Services pregame show begins at 7:00 pm. Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey starts at 7:30 on CJNB and CJNS.
