Kobelka stops 21, North Stars lose 2-0 at home to the Melfort Mustangs

The night after a 3-2 shootout loss in Melfort, the North Stars (2-2-0-1) were shutout 2-0 by the Mustangs in North Battleford. Battlefords was missing Carter Geysen who served a one-game suspension for a major-interference penalty in their first game against Melfort.

Before the game, the North Stars were awarded their banner for winning the Nutrien division in the 2024-25 season, but the celebration was cut short early on.

Melfort got onto the board under two minutes in when Reis Nyland intercepted a pass from Sebastian Miles and put it top shelf past Kaeden Serpa. Battlefords got a couple of powerplay opportunities in the first period but weren’t able to capitalize.

The North Stars were able to get more opportunities in the second period thanks to three powerplays, but special teams proved to be an issue and they couldn’t score on any of them. Their 10 shots in the period was a game high.

About halfway into the third period, Kaeden Serpa went down while scrambling. Lincoln Rogers picked it up in the circle and shot it into the empty net while Serpa was still down in the crease to make it 2-0. The Mustangs shut down the North Stars for the rest of the game and took it 2-0. Kason Kobelka was the star for Melfort, turning away all 21 shots he faced.

Serpa kept the Stars in the game, saving 32 of the 34 shots he faced. However, special teams were the killer tonight for Battlefords who went 0/6 on the powerplay and went to the box five times themselves.

After the loss, the North Stars are off until Friday when they host the Humboldt Broncos (5-3-0-0) in the first game of a weekend home and home. The Broncos are coming off of two losses to the Yorkton Terriers over the weekend, and will go up against the Flin Flon Bombers on Tuesday before heading to the Battlefords Friday, Oct. 10.

Battlefords looks to have a few returning players in the lineup on Friday against Humboldt with Braden Nienaber and Carter Geysen returning from their suspensions, and Drew Williamson who wasn’t in the lineup vs Melfort.

The Ultra Print Services Pregame show will start at 7:00 CST, and the puck will drop for Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 on 93.3 Beach Radio and FloHockey.
