2025 BYELECTION

North Battleford sets Jan. 21, 2026 date for council byelection

Sep 9, 2025 | 10:34 AM

Voters in North Battleford will head to the polls early next year to fill a vacant city council seat.

Council approved the byelection date during its Monday meeting, setting Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, as the day residents will cast their ballots.

The vacancy was made official Aug. 31. Returning Officer Stacey Hadley outlined the process for the vote, noting it mirrors a regular municipal election despite typically drawing fewer voters.

“Byelections often bring fewer voters to the polls, but require the same processes, oversight, and procedures as a regular election,” she stated in a release.

Nomination packages for prospective candidates will be available beginning Dec. 3, 2025, with a deadline of Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. Advance polls are tentatively scheduled for Jan. 14 and Jan. 17.

Mayor Kelli Hawtin said she’s eager to see who steps forward to run.

“We’re just hoping to have some interested, community-minded people want to join this council. So, we’re looking forward.”

Hawtin confirmed the city will use a manual ballot count for the byelection.

“More cost efficient and with a lower number of people on the ballot, lower number of positions, our team feels that it’s a reasonable approach.”

The city said it will also host an information session for potential candidates later this year.
