Aug 21, 2025 | 3:41 PM

Residents in and around North Battleford are assessing damage and cleaning up debris today after a powerful storm system tore through the region Wednesday evening, prompting a tornado warning and bringing hail, flooding, and damaging winds.

Environment Canada issued the warning just before 6 p.m., after tracking a severe thunderstorm near Hamlin, moving east at 60 kilometres per hour. The storm impacted multiple rural municipalities, including the R.M. of Battle River and R.M. of North Battleford, as well as Sweet Grass First Nation and Delmas.

Although no tornadoes have been confirmed to have touched down, Environment Canada said they’re still investigating reports. The storm brought with it large hail, heavy rain, and wind gusts surpassing 100 km/h.

In North Battleford, peak wind gusts were recorded at 129 km/h, according to Environment Canada’s Thursday morning report. The city also experienced hen egg-sized hail, measuring up to 51 millimetres.

While the tornado warning was lifted shortly after it was issued, the aftermath of the storm left its mark.

“There were a couple of manhole covers that popped, quite a bit of hail damage throughout the city, and a few trees down,” said Deputy Fire Chief Paul Perry. “But only minor calls, nothing too serious, no injuries, no accidents, no fires. So, it was all relatively good.”

Several streets in the city were briefly flooded, and debris from trees and hail littered roadways Thursday morning. Crews were quick to respond.

“I can confirm that city crews are out and working to mitigate any of the issues and clearing that debris from the street,” said Candace Toma, communications coordinator for the City of North Battleford. “We’re encouraging the public, if they notice anything, to report it through city hall or our online ticket system at cityofnb.ca.”

Damage reports are still being logged, but early indications show most were weather-related — particularly from hail.

Westland Insurance in North Battleford confirmed receiving over 25 calls for vehicle damage, along with four property claims and one farm-related claim as of Thursday morning.

Elsewhere in the region, hail reports included tennis ball to baseball-sized hail in Langham and Radisson, and golf ball-sized hail in Mendham and Blumenthal.
