Town of Battleford approves two new projects

Aug 20, 2025 | 2:50 PM

The Town of Battleford approved two community projects during Monday’s council meeting. Both the pathway lighting project at Battle Springs Park and the wheelchair accessibility ramp at Fred Light Museum got the go-ahead.

The installation of lighting for the pathway at Battle Springs Park was unanimously approved by council. The lighting will make the pathway more accessible for residents to use at all times of the day. Deputy Mayor Clayton Lazar said that approving the project was essential due to the popularity of the pathway.

“We don’t have any lighting in place and that is such a frequently used spot for a lot of our residents, that we would like it to be fully lit. It’s heading towards our campground. So, we want that to be fully lit because right now it’s not.”

With the contract officially approved, work on the pathway lighting project can begin as soon as possible.

The lighting project is one part of the town’s new strategic plan to ensure their infrastructure is sustainable and reliable. By installing the lights, council hopes to improve the walkability of the path, especially at night and on days with low visibility.

Council also unanimously approved the construction of a wheelchair accessibility ramp for the Fred Light Museum. The contract for the ramp was awarded to JR Construction, who plans to donate their labour. Councillor Kevin Russell did not participate or vote in the discussion as to prevent any conflicts of interest.

Construction of the ramp may be postponed to 2026 due to it being late in the construction season. Council is considering purchasing all the materials this year to prevent buying them at a higher cost next year.

Installing a ramp at the museum is part of the town’s strategic plan goal to increase tourism to Battleford. Council believes that more people will come to popular tourist sites like the Fred Light Museum if it is more accessible for people with physical disabilities.

Along with the approval of the two new projects, council also discussed salary grid adjustments for their management positions and a new Public Safety Officer Bylaw.
