A major land purchase has been approved by North Battleford city council, opening the door for a new development in the city’s South Riverview area.

Council voted Wednesday during its special meeting to sell 36.48 acres of land, valued at $1.93 million plus GST, to Strathworkscollab Inc., a buyer representing a development group. The site is located off the Highway 16 Bypass.

The agreement includes several conditions that must be met before Oct. 30, for the transfer to be finalized.

Coun. Greg Lightfoot called the deal a positive step for the city’s growth.

“It’s exciting to see developers looking at our community and recognizing that we are on the cusp of something big here,” Lightfoot said in a statement.

Mayor Kelli Hawtin also welcomed the purchase, saying council is committed to working with developers on any zoning changes that may be needed. Some of those amendments could require public consultation before construction begins.

“This [sale] goes to show that North Battleford is open for business,” she noted.

Information on tax incentives, zoning bylaws and other available land can be obtained through the economic development office or by calling city hall at 306-445-1700.
