Battleford Council approves Strategic Plan

Aug 19, 2025 | 3:35 PM

The Town of Battleford held their August meeting Monday night, with the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan being an important topic of discussion.

The motion to approve the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan that was presented by Birch Consulting Group was passed unanimously by council. The plan outlines town council’s goals for the next three years. The goals in the plan are specifically focused on safety, sustainable infrastructure, quality of life, economic development and tourism.

“It’s a great idea. Our CAO worked really hard on the Strategic Plan. We consulted, we all met months ago to get our Strategic Plan in place for the next four years and it worked out good and we do have some great objectives that we want to go off of that strategic plan with,” Deputy Mayor Clayton Lazar said.

The Strategic Plan’s safety goal is to make Battleford a safe place for residents to move through at any time of day. Council plans to reach this goal by enforcing by-laws, providing and maintaining essential services, working with law enforcement to provide safety and performing a risk assessment of community safety.

Council plans to ensure the town’s infrastructure is reliable and sustainable to support current needs as well as future growth. They plan to achieve this by maintaining and following their current Asset Management Plan, prioritizing paving projects based on the needs of the street or water or sewer, continuing to enhance the walkability of Battleford and by identifying areas to integrate green initiatives.

The plan includes the goal of creating a desirable place for people to live and raise a family. To achieve a higher quality of life, council plans to increase affordable residential housing options, provide a high level of recreational opportunities for residents, commit to keeping Battleford clean and beautiful, improve communications with residents and businesses, maintain a high standard of snow removal and street cleaning and expand urban forestry.

Town council plans to boost economic development by supporting local businesses and attracting new investments to build a resilient economy. They plan to reach this goal by developing an economic development plan, creating a commercial inventory to respond to investment inquiries, continuing their engagement with local developers and existing businesses, and committing to work with Indigenous partners on economic development initiatives and by attracting new businesses to Battleford.

The last goal on the Strategic Plan is to showcase Battleford’s unique offerings to increase tourism. This includes creating an asset list, developing a tourism plan, collaborating with regional tourism partners as well as Tourism Saskatchewan, having staff attend Tourism Saskatchewan workshops and training, and working with partners to create events that attract visitors and tourists.

Council plans to meet the goals in the Strategic Plan by 2028. Projects such as the pathway lighting project at Battle Springs Park and the Fred Light Museum’s accessibility ramp will help bring council closer to meeting their goals.
