BattlefordsNOW take a bite out of Northwest Territorial Days: A foodie’s dream at the fairgrounds

Aug 15, 2025 | 4:37 PM

It’s the last day to experience all the flavours and festivities at Northwest Territorial Days (NWT Days), taking place at the North Battleford Exhibition Grounds — and the BattlefordsNOW team rolled up their sleeves and loosened their belts to take in the incredible variety of eats that make NWT Days a true summer staple.

From deep-fried classics to global flavours and long-standing local favourites, the fairgrounds are buzzing not just with rides and music, but with sizzling skillets, bubbling fryers, and the smell of sweet and savoury treats in the air.

Rotary Club’s Famous Spudnuts

One of the longest-running and most beloved treats at NWT Days comes courtesy of the Rotary Club of the Battlefords: the iconic Spudnuts. These potato flour-based doughnuts are a softer, airier take on the classic, and for many fairgoers, they’re the first stop of the day.

“They’re made out of potato flower and they’re just delicious,” said Jason Russell, an 11-year Rotarian who’s helped serve up thousands of Spudnuts over the years. “We have people that just come to the fair specifically for us. We sell thousands of Spudnuts every year and raise over $20,000 a year selling them at NWT Days.”

But that kind of flavour takes work. Russell explained, “Starts at about 5:00 AM, making the dough and it rises. It rises in tubs for about two hours, and then we cut them all into the specific can size that we use and then a whole group of people form them. Then they got to rise for another hour and then they go into the fryer and then they’re ready to roll.”

Food Trip Brings Asian Street Eats

Hailing from Moose Jaw, the Food Trip food truck has been turning heads and satisfying cravings with its vibrant variety of Asian dishes. From stir fry noodles and sushi to bubble tea and BBQ skewers, the truck offers something for everyone, but their best sellers are the Korean corn dogs and Siomai.

“Korean corn dogs are the most popular,” said owner Quiel Apuada. “They are half cheese and half sausage coated with potato and deep fried — it’s the best seller. It’s been grateful for us that everyone here is very lovely and the people appreciate our food.”

And if you haven’t tried Siomai yet, now’s the time, these steamed dumplings filled with pork and shrimp are sweet, spicy, savoury, and undeniably delicious.

Ukrainian Classics Hit the Spot

The Ukrainian Catholic Church’s food booth has been dishing up heritage and heart with every plate, offering homemade perogies, borscht, cabbage rolls, and sausage.

“All the food is prepared in the church at the church, and then it is delivered over here,” said server Kaden Cardinal. “So, it’s very fresh, it’s all homemade and really delicious.”

For Cardinal, the cabbage rolls are a personal favourite. “I’ve had lots of different cabbage rolls and these are definitely my favorite. The perogies are also really good.”

Dam Fine Deep Fried Brings the Heat

If it’s deep-fried, Dam Fine Deep Fried probably has it, and possibly on camera. This travelling carnival food trailer, run by Cody Thompson, is serving up all the greasy, guilty pleasures you’d expect at the fair and a few surprises too.

“We serve all sorts of greasy carnival foods. Food everybody wants to see at the fair,” Thompson said. “From cheese curds to mini doughnuts to lemonade, corn dogs, deep fried chocolate bars and Oreos. All the novelty carnival foods, that’s what we serve.”

Fan favourites? “The cheese curds, or the corn dogs, the Oreos, they’re really good,” he added.

In fact, their corn dogs are so big, they’re gunning for a Guinness World Record. “We have a seven-inch and a footlong corn dog. We’re actually going for the world record for the longest corn dog in the world,” Thompson shared.

And if that wasn’t enough, Thompson and his crew are the stars of an upcoming reality TV show. “We have 3 concession trailers, we’ve been traveling all across Western Canada. We had somebody approach us to do a television show following our life, our personalities and where we go, and the people we meet along the way as well as the food aspect of everything. The show is called Deep Fried Detours. They’re putting the show together now. We hope to be on some streaming sites, some local cable channels and we are on social media as well.”

Ending on a Sweet Note

As if NWT Days wasn’t sweet enough already, yesterday also marked the 23rd annual Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen locations across Saskatchewan. Every Blizzard® Treat purchased helped support the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, keeping proceeds in the province.

Last year, over 83,000 children and moms-to-be visited the hospital from 575 communities across Saskatchewan.

Don’t Miss Out!

With today, August 15, being the final day of NWT Days, this is your last chance to grab a Spudnut, a footlong corn dog, cabbage rolls, a bubble tea, or a deep-fried Oreo (or all of them, no judgment). Whether you’re a foodie or just hungry for summer fun, Northwest Territorial Days is a feast for all senses.

Get down to the North Battleford Exhibition Grounds while you still can…and come hungry.
