Interested organ and tissue donors now need to register online

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is reminding the public to register to become an organ and tissue donor.

You may not be aware that the process to do so has changed in recent years.

The Saskatchewan Organ and Tissue Donor Registry was established almost five years ago, and signing up to become a donor has changed during that time.

“Donor stickers are no longer used on health cards to show you plan to be an organ/tissue donor,” the SHA said in a social media post.

They said you can register online and have a conversation with your family about your desire to become a donor.

“Your decision to donate can save up to 8 lives and enhance 75 more,” explained the SHA release.

Ministry of Health Senior Media Relations Consultant Dale Hunter said the registry replaced the paper cards and stickers used previously and is easy to do. Residents need their Health Services card number, first and last name, and date of birth. Hunter added that explaining your wishes to your loved ones is another key step.

“As always, be sure to also talk with your next-of-kin, so they understand your decision,” said Hunter. “Loved ones are more likely to agree to donation if they are already aware of your wishes.”

You can also choose to email your next-of-kin to make sure they get notice of your registry.

Organ and tissue donation was highlighted immediately after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. Tragically, Logan Boulet was among the sixteen people killed in the crash. Prior to it, Boulet told his parents that he planned to register to become an organ and tissue donor, and after his death his mom and dad donated his organs as per his wishes.

Green Shirt Day is held every April 7 in honour of Logan Boulet and organ donation across the country, and people are asked to consider becoming a donor in his memory. National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week is held during the last full week of April each year across Canada.
