NAIG Council announces that 2027 games will no longer be held in Calgary

The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Council has announced that Calgary will no longer host the 2027 Games, following an extensive period of support and evaluation.

In a statement released last week, the NAIG Council said the decision to withdraw Calgary’s hosting rights came after “deep reflection and careful consideration.” Despite two years of collaboration with the Calgary Host Society, the Council concluded that critical benchmarks required to deliver the Games could not be met.

“This decision was not made lightly,” the Council said, noting its efforts to provide guidance, capacity-building support, and external expertise to help the Host Society meet planning and budgeting requirements.

The Council extended gratitude to those involved in the Calgary 2027 initiative, including Dr. Chief Littlechild, who has chaired the Host Society Board since March 2025.

While acknowledging the disappointment the decision may bring to Indigenous athletes and communities across Turtle Island, the NAIG Council reaffirmed its commitment to Indigenous youth and to finding a new path forward for the Games.
