“I think this is great. It’s raining and everybody’s still out here… It’s what Battleford is about,” said longtime resident Tracy Hodgins, watching the Ruby Jubilee parade wind through the streets Friday night.

“This is all that small-town feel. It’s all the connections.”

More than 50 organizations joined the 40th anniversary celebration, which began and ended at the track behind St. Vital School, and went ahead despite the rain. Local MLA Jeremy Cockrill and MP for Battlefords–Lloydminster Rosemarie Falk were among those in attendance to show their support.

For 30-year resident Leanna Chartier, the milestone is still sinking in.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been this long. This is awesome,” she said.

Among the participants was Michelle Turner, who brought two ponies with her nieces.

“It’s wonderful. Anything to do with the community and when people come and support, and to have this going for that long is a wonderful thing.”

Her niece, Sadie Heidel, said they came “for the fun of it. It is so fun.”

“It’s really cool to see all the floats here.”

The lineup included the RCMP, the Battlefords North Stars, the Discovery Co-op, the Fred Light Museum’s antique truck, and First Nations such as Sweetgrass First Nation and Mosquito-Grizzly Bear’s Head-Lean Man First Nation.
