Forgotten ticket turns into $1M surprise for Lloydminster couple

Aug 1, 2025 | 3:28 PM

Cory and Lynnette Edwards almost tossed aside a Western Max ticket collecting dust in their kitchen — until it turned out to be worth $1 million.

The Lloydminster couple bought the ticket for the May 23 draw but didn’t realize it was a winner until Cory decided to check a stack of old tickets under the stove light after supper one evening.

“It came up as $1 million dollars, and I thought, ‘That can’t be right!’” Cory said in a statement issued Friday.

“I checked the ticket two or three times before I called Lynnette over to ask her to scan it, too!”

Lynnette was just as shocked. “She said, ‘You’re kidding me, right?’ and then scanned it — and all she said was, ‘Are you serious?!’” Cory recalled.

The couple later realized the ticket had been sitting around for two months.

“I just can’t believe it was sitting there for two months,” Lynnette said with a laugh.

Cory said they plan to invest the winnings for now, with the idea of tackling some home renovations down the road.

The winning ticket was purchased at North Stop Co‑op on 49 Avenue in Lloydminster. The Edwardses matched one of the $1‑million selections in the May 23 Western Max draw, with numbers 14, 26, 36, 42, 43, 46 and 47.

Sask Lotteries said proceeds from ticket sales support more than 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups across Saskatchewan.
