Cando’s Hirschfeld family raising money in honour of deceased Steven

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Steven Hirschfeld passed away after his second battle with a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer, at only 27 years old.

Originally from a farm in the Cando and Landis area, Steven was known for his ‘full send’ personality and his ability to make friends with anyone and everyone that walked into his life.

Now, three of Steven’s family members are working to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in his honour. BattlefordsNOW spoke with his mother Carey who, along with Steven’s sister Brittany and his widowed wife Robin, are taking part in the Women for Wishes campaign in an effort to raise $10,000, the average amount each granted wish costs.

“I wanted to do it with the other Hirschfeld ladies and they agreed to come on board with us, so now we’re a team and it’s been very rewarding and humbling and hard. People who knew Steven knew about his energy and his zest for life and that he always wanted to give back to everyone else. So, you know, it’s a bittersweet win, us raising the money for this and we’re very honoured to be a part of it.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was a cause near and dear to Steven and the rest of the Hirschfeld family. During his first cancer diagnosis in 2009, when he was just 13 years old, Steven had to go through 20 rounds of chemotherapy.

After his first round, the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Steven his wish. Instead of heading on a exotic trip somewhere or getting a visit from someone famous, Steven went with something that would be a source of escape for him and his family for years to come: a new camper.

“The first trip up to Waskesiu and him viewing the ‘beauties on the beach’, that was quite a memory in typical Steven fashion,” remarked Carey with a laugh. “I think it was just mostly just getting away and spending time together. When you have a farm, especially a mixed grain and cattle farm, most people in Saskatchewan would understand how tough it is to give yourself the permission to step away and take a break. I think if anything Steve’s first journey taught us, is that it’s OK to just take a break cause the list is never going to get done. So you know, take that break and enjoy the quality time and just spend time with family because it’s important.”

The online campaign to raise money in Steven’s honour has been going on for a close to a week now, and while Carey isn’t sure of the exact total they have raised so far. Carey said the Hirschfelds are planning a few more smaller fundraisers including some raffles with donations that have come from around the community, and any of that information can be found on Carey’s Facebook page.

“If we are fortunate, and it sounds like we are, we’ve had been reached out to with some beautiful benefactors that are helping us get there. We are already on wish number two. So we have been very fortunate to make that happen, so the more wishes that we grant, the more we can help kids get through what they need to do, and that’s our goal. That’s what’s behind all of this.”

While the fundraiser towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation is intended to honour Steven’s memory, his family has taken steps in their day to day lives to try and honour him as well.

“Even now, that’s something that we as a family are reminding ourselves to do, take that time, take a break. There is nothing that important that you can’t stop and take a break and enjoy family and take that minute, have that conversation, have that cup of coffee, stop and have that beer if you need to. It’s important and that’s just what Steve is all about.”
