Province finalizes lease for new RCMP regional training hub in North Battleford

The former Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) retail store in downtown North Battleford will soon be home to an expanded RCMP detachment, following the finalization of a lease agreement between the Government of Saskatchewan and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The lease, officially ratified on July 2, marks the start of a major renovation project to repurpose the property at 1001 – 101 Street for long-term public safety use. The provincial government has also issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking consultants to lead the design, planning, and construction oversight for the site’s transformation.

“The lease and upcoming renovations show our support for long-term investment in public safety infrastructure, while making efficient use of existing government-owned property,” said SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister David Marit. “This is infrastructure that will directly strengthen front-line policing in Saskatchewan.”

The project includes extensive upgrades, from schematic and detailed designs to construction drawings and contract administration. Once complete, the revamped facility will support RCMP operations and serve as a regional training hub, further solidifying the police presence in the Battlefords area.

Local leaders welcomed the announcement as a boost to both safety and the economy.

“This lease agreement is great news for our community,” said Health Minister and North Battleford MLA Jeremy Cockrill. “By bringing the RCMP into this space and investing in needed renovations, we are supporting community safety, creating local jobs, and making good use of existing infrastructure.”

“We are extremely pleased that the RCMP will be expanding its presence in the Battlefords region with the development of a regional RCMP training hub,” said North Battleford Mayor Kelli Hawtin. “This project will bring significant economic benefits to our city and the surrounding areas through the addition of permanent RCMP staff and a steady flow of officers attending training.”

The renovation is expected to take 18 to 24 months, after which the RCMP will begin operations in the building.

The repurposing of the North Battleford location is part of a broader government strategy to maximize the use of SLGA-owned properties. Of the 34 SLGA stores previously operated by the province, 19 were government-owned. Four, including North Battleford, have been identified for reuse by other public-sector agencies, while the remaining properties are listed for sale on slga.com.
