Scam posing as Red Cross targets Sask. wildfire evacuees: FCAA

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) is warning the public about a scam preying on wildfire evacuees.

In a statement issued Friday, the FCAA said individuals have reported receiving fraudulent messages claiming to be from the Canadian Red Cross, asking for personal and banking information under the guise of providing emergency financial assistance.

The Canadian Red Cross says it does not request social insurance numbers, bank account details or credit card information when registering people for support.

The FCAA is urging residents to be cautious when contacted by organizations requesting sensitive information. Common signs of a scam include unsolicited calls or texts, email addresses that do not match the organization, spelling or grammar errors, suspicious links, too-good-to-be-true offers, and pressure to act quickly.

People are advised not to engage with suspicious messages, click on links, or share personal details through email, phone or text. Suspected scams should be reported to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The FCAA also reminds the public that it licenses for-profit fundraising businesses acting on behalf of registered charities. Organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross are registered through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Residents can verify an organization’s status through the FCAA or CRA websites.
