New cheer club brings spirit, stunts, and smiles to the Battlefords

There’s a new reason to cheer in the Battlefords. Aerial Cheer Athletics, the town’s new all-star cheerleading club has officially concluded their inaugural year and has already started to make their mark, bringing high-flying stunts, dynamic routines, and a whole lot of spirit to the community.

Founded by long-time John Paull II (JPII) Collegiate cheer advisor, Rena Fauchon, and JPII cheer coach, Julia Klippenstein, the club is the only one in the area and aims to bring competitive cheer to the local youth while building confidence and teamwork.

“There was a club here years ago and it kind of dissolved. Then especially with how big cheer is getting, I was thinking someone should start one and I had Julia who was the coach for John Paul, and I was like you should do this with me and then we got it going,” Fauchon said.

In the club’s first year, they only had one team but saw great success in the three competitions they attended. Now, going into the second year, Fauchon has seen an increase in interest and wants to expand the competition.

“We had only one team, the U12’s and they went to the Best of the West, the Warman Classic and provincials. Their first competition, they hit zero and overall, it was a good first year and we have had lots of inquiries, so hopefully the second year we can have a few more teams, and we are going to try and do at least five competitions,” said Fauchon.

Apart from the success the club, they also had great response from the athletes and parents, with one parent saying, “It’s high energy and lots of fun, the kids are taught everything to compete, it’s an underrated sport and the coaches are amazing.”

While one cheerleader said, “Cheer is so much fun, I had so much fun going to competitions, learning new things and meeting new friends.”

Tryouts for the club is this Thursday, May 1 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Fauchon said no experience is needed if people want to come and give it a shot.

“Anyone can learn to cheer. You don’t need to have prior experience. If you like to dance, if you like to tumble if, do stunts, meet new friends, it’s really a positive environment and it’s competitive. It is super fun and you build a little family within the cheer club, so we invite everyone to come and try it out,” she said.

Tryouts are free and open to anyone ages 7-18. For more information check out the Aerial Cheer Athletics Facebook page.
