JPII Cheer earns silver in Vancouver to finish off the season

It was the biggest and final competition of the year for the John Paul II (JPII) Collegiate Cheer Team this past weekend as they were all the way in Vancouver to compete in the Sea to Sky International Cheer Competition.

The event had teams come from all over North America to compete on the big stage and JPII made their presence known, taking home the silver medal in their division.

This was JPII’s first time attending the competition in nine years and coach Rena Fauchon said it was a great way to end off the season.

“It’s a huge competition and there were teams from Canada and the States. We haven’t been there for nine years, but we felt that we had the right team, the right commitment and we thought let’s give it a try again and we placed second, which is awesome and a nice way to end the season. We couldn’t be happier,” she said.

Throughout the weekend, the team performed two times, once on Saturday and once on Sunday. All said and done, they put on an impressive routine, finishing with a final event score of 67.575 and only got one deduction to claim second place.

The results didn’t come easily though as in the weeks leading up to the event, the team put in tons of extra hours of practice, Fauchon said.

“The last couple of weeks, we practiced hard, we had extra practices put in, we were practicing till 10:00 at night, just trying to get in as many practices and reps as we could. All the girls are busy because they’re high school age and work too. So, there was a lot of a lot of rearranging the stuff, but we did it and we’re very proud of the girls and we’re very happy with second and it was very well deserved,” Fauchon said.

Apart from the hard work put into practice, another huge aspect of attending the competition was the hard work put into fundraising for the event.

Fauchon added they were grateful for all the community support that made the trip possible.

“We’ve been planning Vancouver for two years because we needed a lot of time to fundraise, and the last two years have been awesome. So, we are just very thankful for all the local support we got and for everyone who supported us through fundraising,” said Fauchon.

The JPII Cheer Team will now only have a few months off before they get back into action this August.
