Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser hopes to strike support from community

With over $100,000 raised over eight years, the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Battlefords now look to add even more to that total with one of their biggest and most anticipated initiatives of the year.

Started in 2017 with a goal of just $3,000, the Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser has now set a goal of $25,000 for this year and Program Lead for the BBBS of the Battlefords, Renee Sperling said that it wouldn’t be possible without the community

“For us, it’s a huge deal. When we first started, we were looking at between $3,000 to $5,000 that we would end up making. Last year, we were around $15,000 and then this year we set a goal for $25,000 and we’re just over halfway there. It’s pretty incredible, especially because a lot of the support for Big Brothers Big Sisters comes from the community, volunteers and community partnership,” she said.

The fundraiser takes place on Sunday, April 27 at Gutters Bowling and Game Centre and will hopefully see anywhere from 200 to 300 people take part in the event. It’ll be a full day of bowling and community fun along with a raffle, chances to take home some prizes and win a family getaway experience.

All the funds raised from the event along with donations from community will go back into BBBS programs and youth, said Sperling.

“We basically use the funds wherever they are needed, so if it’s needed for a specific project that the youth are interested in, it goes towards that, or being able to celebrate youth is another one, or being able to help support community programs or any sort of events, things like the Teddy Bear clinic, B.E.A.T.S program and stuff like that,” Sperling said.

Sperling added that the BBBS encourages anyone who wants to make a difference in the community to consider joining them in building connections with the youth.

“We’re always looking for new mentors and we always have youth that are looking for that community connection, really just people who are able to hang out and do things that they enjoy doing with somebody else…you never know the magic of the friendship and the opportunity that you have,” she said.
