Sharks ready to attack in final game of championship series

After spitting the first two games of the Sask. Female U18 AAA Hockey League finals (SFU18AAAHL), the Battlefords Sharks are getting ready to try and seal the deal at home for their first ever league title on Saturday, March 29th in the third and final game of the series against the Saskatoon Stars.

Looking back to the first two games, the Sharks got shut out in Game 1 at the Battleford Arena 3-0 but then had a big bounce back in Game 2 at the Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, winning 2-1 to tie the series.

Despite the loss in Game 1, Sharks Head Coach Nolan Horbach said that he thought the team played well and it was just a matter of cleaning up the details for Game 2.

“We knew we did a lot of good things right in the first game and we just kind of looked to clean up a few little things, like our play away from the puck and how we can keep the play going as opposed to maybe killing it… So, I thought we did a good job of that, and we did a pretty good job of limiting their chances as well and some girls made some huge blocks and key plays at certain times to preserve the win,” he said.

Now, it all comes down to Saturday for the Sharks to continue their historic run and looking ahead to the final matchup, Horbach said the big key for the team is their play away from the puck.

“We really need to be good away from the puck, and I think even though there’s a lot of offense on both sides and both benches, I think we need to limit the opportunities and capitalize when we get a chance, and we’ll good,” Horbach said.

Apart from the play on the ice, another big factor that the team has prioritized throughout the season is their mentality going into these big names.

Horbach added that having home-ice advantage and the fan support will help a lot with that aspect.

“Mentally, we’ve done a lot of good things over the year and we’re just kind of rely on habits and little things that we’ve done but we’ve also had contributions from everybody throughout the year to help us secure home ice and it’s paid off because now we get to host the biggest game of the year in our rink, so that’s big for us,” said Horbach.

Puck drop for the game is at 5:00 p.m. at the Battleford Arena, Saturday, March 29.
