Meadow Lake RCMP warm of scam calls from ‘fake cops’

Mar 25, 2025 | 11:00 AM

If the Mounties call asking for your social insurance number, hang up; it’s a scam.

Meadow Lake RCMP warn fraudsters are posing as officers to steal personal information. One resident recently got a call that looked legit, but it wasn’t.

“If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and do not provide any information,” RCMP said in a statement Tuesday.

Mounties are urging people to stay vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from fraud.

That includes never sharing personal information with unknown callers, using strong passwords for online accounts and verifying the identity of anyone requesting money or sensitive details.

They also warn against falling for high-pressure tactics.

“Scammers can be very convincing and will try to create a sense of urgency,” police said. “Don’t be afraid to say no. Hang up if something doesn’t feel right.”

Adding that fraudsters often prey on people’s emotions and trust, and that anyone can become a victim.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call should report it to local police at 310-RCMP and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
