North Stars tie the series with strong Game 2

Mar 23, 2025 | 4:30 AM

The Battlefords North Stars had a huge bounce back in Game 2 against the Weyburn Red Wings last night, beating them 5-2 to tie the playoff series 1-1.

In the first period, the North Stars opened up the scoring just past the midway point of the period, coming from Colton Getzlaff to take a 1-0 lead. Shortly after that, the North Stars found the back of the net again, this time coming from Seth Dragan to go up 2-0.

Then to end off the period, Colton Getzlaff was able to light the lamp once more to give Battlefords a 3-0 lead going into the intermission.

Coming out for the second period though, Weyburn finally gained some momentum and was able to get on the board, just 57 seconds in to close the gap and make it a 3-1 game. However, it didn’t take long for the North Stars to answer back, scoring just five minutes after from Carter Geysen to extend the lead to 4-1.

Throughout the rest of the period, both teams had some chances but no one could score and the game went to the third with Battlefords still up 4-1.

Then in the third, the Red Wings tried to mount the comeback, scoring early on in the period to lessen the deficit to 4-2. As the period went on though, Battlefords continued to play solid in their own zone and shut down the Red Wings. Eventually, the North Stars sealed the deal with an empty net goal in the final minutes from Gavin Granger to make it 5-2 and win the game.

The shots were even at 31 by the end of the game with the North Stars going 0/2 on the powerplay and stopping Weyburn all four times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric had a very solid performance, stopping 29/31 shots while making some big saves in the third.

The North Stars have now tied the playoff series 1-1 and will have a chance to take the lead with the Games 3 and 4 this Tuesday, March 25, and Wednesday, March 26.

Puck drop for both games is at 7:30 p.m. at the Access Communications Centre and you can tune into the games with the Napa Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast on CJNB/CJNS. Ultra Print pregame show starts at 7:00 p.m. on both nights.
