Positive team culture leads to undefeated weekend in Melfort

It was another successful showing for the Battlefords Volleyball Club (BVC) Team Storm as they went undefeated in Melfort this past weekend at the North East Rage Riot Tournament to claim first place in the competition.

Only losing a single set throughout the weekend, BVC Storm head coach Kim Voegeli said it was the team’s culture that helped lead them to success.

“Our positive team culture, I think that’s what really the foundation for our team and our success has been, just really cultivating that positive team culture. I don’t really define success all the time as winning and losing, I think building a good positive team culture, that’s important,” Voegeli said.

The weekend began with three games of pool play and the BVC started off strong right from the get-go, beating the CVVC Storm, Melfort Storm and Wadena Thunder all two sets to none to make the playoffs.

In the playoffs, the Storm continued with their impressive play, beating Johnnys Bad Habits in two sets to advance to the semi-final. Then it was then a rematch against the Wadena Thunder in the semis, and the BVC prevailed again, winning in two sets to move on to the finals.

For the finals, the Storm had their toughest game of the tournament as they got matched up against the tournament host, North East Rage. In the first set, it was a close battle with some exciting rallies, and it came down to the wire, but the Storm pulled out the win 26-24. In the second set, the BVC started to trail mid-way through and tried to bounce back but just couldn’t overcome, losing the set 25-17.

Then it all came down to the third and final set, and similar to the first, it was an exciting one. Both teams came out ready to play, exchanging point for point all the way until the end, but it was the Storm who pulled away, squeaking out the win 15-13 to take first place in the tournament.

Even though the win was a big moment, Voegeli said it was the hard work the team put in that really stood out.

“I’m always super proud of how they show up, how they work together and just always proud of them for how they show up at these tournaments and they just give it all they got. They play every match like it’s a critical match no matter what. They play with their whole heart, and they play for each other,” she said.

The BVC Team Fusion also played in their second Sask. Cup this past weekend and placed 20th out of 40 teams.

The BVC now heads to Langham for a tournament this weekend to prepare for the next Sask. Cup in Regina from April 4-6.
