City of North Battleford hosting zoning bylaw public open house

North Battleford sees friendly future for businesses.

After spending time speaking with community members, business leaders and developers, city council will host an open house on Mar. 19 to get public feedback on zoning bylaw amendments.

The goal is to make the city more business friendly by creating more mixed-use space downtown, including potentially adding 27 more uses and increase flexibility about development space that could include room for secondhand stores, mixed-use residential or day homes.

The come and go open house will be held at the North Battleford Library from 5 to 7 p.m.

According to a news release, the consultation will be for the proposed Official Community Plan (OCP) Amendment Bylaw number 2174, proposed Zoning Bylaw 2176: C1, C3, C3A, C4 use changes and Proposed Zoning Bylaw number 2175. The former of which are connected due to the need for approval required by the Minister of Government Relations.

According to the city’s website, the proposed bylaw 2174 would not only allow for potentially mixed-use space but also “encourage downtown (re)development through incentivization” and “remove the policy restriction on limiting major office and financial institution developments to the downtown.” Should it be passed, the focus would also be in the regional, and commercial areas.

Proposed bylaw 2175 will address flexibility and make “a change to the regulations from Ambulance Services to a more general term of Emergency and Protective Services.”

Meanwhile, the proposed Bylaw 2176 is expected to have a longer consultation process as it would expand the footprint of office buildings and financial organizations. As such, the first reading is scheduled for Mar. 24 with the second, third and adoption of the bylaw to be determined. Bylaws 2124/25 were already introduced last month and are scheduled to have their second and third readings on Mar. 24.
