North Stars drops close contest against Bombers

Mar 9, 2025 | 3:33 AM

It was a close one last night, but the Battlefords North Stars ended up falling just short against the Flin Flon Bombers, losing 3-1 in their fourth and final matchup against them this season.

For the first period, the North Stars came out way stronger than the night before and controlled the first five minutes of the game with solid shots and good puck possession. Eventually, the momentum started to even out and both teams traded rushes and found good chances but it was the Bombers who opened up the scoring with a powerplay goal to take the lead 1-0.

The North Stars were able to answer back with a powerplay goal of their own though, coming from Anthony Campbell just as the period was winding down to tie the game 1-1 going into the intermission.

In the second period, the back and forth battle continued with neither team giving an inch and both goalies making big saves. Despite some good opportunities from both sides, still no one found the back of the net and the game went to the third tied 1-1.

Coming out for the third period, it was the Bombers who got the go ahead goal on the powerplay again to retake the lead 2-1. As the period continued, the North Stars fought hard to even the score and even had a five on three powerplay but couldn’t convert to tie the game.

Then in the final minutes, Battlefords pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in attempt to even things out but still couldn’t make it happen and the Bombers grabbed an empty netter to take the win 3-1.

The North Stars got outshot 44 to 27, went 1/6 on the powerplay and stopped Flin Flon five out of seven times on the penalty kill.

Despite the loss, Connor Baumbach had a great game stopping 42/44 shots.

Battlefords record now is at 27-22-3-2 on the season, bumping them down to seventh overall in the league and second in the Nutrien Division.

The North Stars play their final two games of the regular season next weekend as they take on the Kindersley Klippers in back-to-back games on March 14 and 15.
