PROVINCIAL FUNDING

Saskatchewan commits over $34M to upgrade rural roads and bridges

Mar 7, 2025 | 11:18 AM

The Saskatchewan government and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) are investing $34.4 million in 32 rural road, bridge, and culvert projects to improve transportation and support the province’s export-based economy.

Through the Rural Integrated Roads for Growth (RIRG) program, the Ministry of Highways will contribute $12.6 million, while rural municipalities (RMs) will cover the remaining $21.7 million.

Highways Minister David Marit said the improvements will help strengthen the connection between rural roads and the provincial highway network.

“”These projects will enhance the integration of rural roads and the provincial highway network so that farmers, ranchers, businesses and industries can ship their goods more efficiently,” Marit said in a statement issued on Friday.

The funding will support projects in several RMs, including:

• $6.5M for surface strengthening in Eldon No. 471 (province covering $500,000)

• $1.6M for road rehabilitation in Estevan No. 5

• $2M for bridge replacement in Meadow Lake No. 588

• $1.3M for clay capping in Snipe Lake No. 259

The RIRG program provides up to 50 per cent funding per project, capped at $500,000 for roads and $1 million for bridges and culverts. Construction is set for 2025, with RMs managing the projects.

SARM President Bill Huber emphasized the need for reliable rural transportation infrastructure.

“Without reliable roads, bridges, and culverts, we can’t get goods to market,” he said.

“Perhaps now more than ever, improving our transportation infrastructure in rural areas is needed to bring stability and strength to our economy — not only as a province, but also as a nation.”
