North Stars top Bruins in thrilling showdown

Mar 1, 2025 | 2:41 AM

The Battlefords North Stars were at the Access Communications Centre last night and after a back and forth contest, ended up beating the Estevan Bruins 7-5 to get their third win a row.

Coming out for the first period, the North Stars were on fire, grabbing two early goals from Rylan Williams and Seth Dragan to open things up and take a 2-0 lead.

Following that, with just over 8 minutes left in the first, Anthony Campbell added another one for the North Stars to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

As the period went on though, the Bruins started to find momentum and found the back of the net twice to lessen the deficit and make it 3-2 going into the intermission.

In the second, despite having the lead, Battlefords had a hard time getting things going and the Bruins were able to hold the North Stars in their own zone for a majority of the period. This eventually resulted in a goal for Estevan nearing the end of the second to tie the game 3-3.

For the third, the North Stars started to get back on track, scoring a goal just a minute into the period from Gavin Granger to retake the lead 4-3. Then shortly after that, the Bruins answered right back with one of their own to tie it up again 4-4.

The tie didn’t last for long though as the North Stars responded with not one, but two more goals coming from Anthony Campbell and Bryce Boughen to go up 6-4. Estevan was able to strike the nylon once more to close the gap but it just wasn’t enough as the North Stars grabbed an empty netter from Colton Getzlaff to seal the deal 7-5 and win the game.

The North Stars got outshot 42 to 30, went 1/3 on the powerplay and stopped the Bruins all five times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 37 out of 42 shots in the win.

The North Stars record now improves to 26-20-3-2 on the season for 57 points, keeping them at sixth overall in the league and first in their division.

Battlefords takes on Estevan again tonight at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
